Fossil coral is an organic gem material that has been
used for ornamental
purposes for several thousand years.
coral occurs naturally in a broad range of attractive colors.
However, the supply of these colored fossil corals have been greatly
reduced due to various reasons. This reduction in the supply of
naturally colored fossil coral has led to the practice of dyeing
pale-colored and white fossil coral into various colors. Commonly,
the white and light colored fossil coral is bleached prior to the
dyeing process so that better penetration and more homogeneous
coloration may be achieved. Additionally, polymer impregnation may
be used to enhance the appearance of fossil coral and give it a
smoother surface, which makes it more useful for many applications
like using it for knife handles. A large portion, as high as
90–95%, of the fossil coral entering the market is color-enhanced.
This particular piece of fossil coral I used for the handles has
been dyed a beautiful blood red and the color provides a nice
contrast to the striations and ribbing of the fossil coral.
Giraffe bones I use are from the leg bones of the Giraffe. These
bones come from South Africa and were legally obtained from
harvested animals. Giraffe bones have a nice patina
and this piece provides a nice contrast to the Fossil Red Coral.
