Additional Information: Fossil bones are the preserved remains of animals from the ancient past.  These ancient bones went through a permineralization process which occurred because the animal was buried and groundwater found its way into the empty spaces of the bone. Due to permineralization the bones often have a beautiful patina. This particular piece has two different sides. On one side there are a bunch of exposed bone cells. On the other side is a polished side. These sides came from the same bone. The exposed cell side is from the interior of the bone. The polished side is from the exterior of the bone.

The Buffalo Horn I use in my knives is actually from domesticated water buffalo from Southeast Asia. There are at least 130 million domesticated water buffalo and more people depend on them than on any other domesticated animal. Occasionally, the all black buffalo horn develops light colored streaks which makes a nice contrast to the Fossil Bone.
