Myrtle is a deciduous tree native to the Pacific Northwest. The
tree grows large and is a strong
dense wood used in gun stocks and musical instruments. The tree
occasionally produces a burl that makes a
growth in which the grain is radically deformed because of some
stress or damage and makes small birdseye knots,
Red Beech grows on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
Generally it is found on lower hills and inland valley floors. The
wood has a quite distinctive reddish color and the burl has
beautiful large birdseye figure. The
Red Beech Burl I use came from a well-known wood turner on the North
Island. This gentlemen collected unique wood pieces for over 30
years and I was able to purchase a few of his best pieces.
provides a nice contrast to the Myrtle Burl.
