Additional Information: Sapele is a large deciduous tree that grows in tropical Africa. The wood is reddish-brown and is used for flooring and musical instruments. Sapele can sometimes become quilted. The quilted wood looks like small 3-d pillows and is an extremely rare and precious wood. Part of the reason for its scarcity is that it is almost all being sold to veneer manufactures who pay more and have thus cornered the market. Quilted Sapele is often flat sawn and allows the beautiful pillow-like figure to be showcased to maximum effect. The Quilted Sapele I use came from West Africa.

Box Elder is a fast growing tree that was often planted as a shade tree and for windbreaks. The wood is plain but sometimes Box Elder produces a burl in which the grain is radically deformed because of some stress or damage and makes small birdseye knots. This burl wood is highly figured. The Box Elder Burl I use in my knives comes from a storm-damaged tree that was part of the original trees planted during the Mormon migration to Utah. This particular piece has lots of figure and provides a nice contrast to the Quilted Sapele.
