Additional
Information:
Sapele is a large deciduous tree that grows in tropical Africa.
The wood is reddish-brown and is used for flooring and musical
instruments. Sapele can sometimes become quilted. The quilted wood
looks like small 3-d pillows and is an extremely rare and precious
wood. Part
of the reason for its scarcity is that it is almost all being sold
to veneer manufactures who pay more and have thus cornered the
market. Quilted Sapele is
often
flat sawn
and allows the
beautiful pillow-like figure to be showcased to maximum effect. The
Quilted Sapele I use came from West Africa.
A
Sycamore tree, often called an American plane tree or buttonwood
tree, can grow to a massive size and grows in riparian and wetland
areas. Sycamore wood has a rather plain appearance with some flecks.
However, when the wood becomes spalted it becomes quite attractive.
Spalted wood is wood that is in the process of rotting and has a
bunch of fungi in the wood. The fungi makes lines pen-like black
lines, in Sycamore, and results in some wild looking figure. The Spalted Sycamore
I use has lots of pen-like black lines and came from a saw mill in
South-Central Pennsylvania. This saw mill owner collects unique
primo one-of-a-kind pieces of wild looking woods for me.
This
particular piece
of wood
provides a nice contrast to the Quilted Sapele.
