Information:
Buckeye
is a medium-sized deciduous tree that primarily grows in the Midwest
and lower Great Plains. The wood is rather plain and
yellowish-white. However, Buckeye also grows in the foothills of
California where it often produces a burl. The burl is
a growth in which the grain is radically deformed because of some
stress or damage and makes small birdseye knots and swirly figure.
California Buckeye Burl also is usually spalted. This spalted
Buckeye burl wood which was in the process of rotting has a bunch of
fungi in the wood. The fungi makes a lot of the yellowish-white and
blueish gray colors. Buckeye Burl is one of the prettiest woods in
the world because it has lots of swirly figure, birdseye, and
two-tone coloration.
The
Poplar wood sold in the United States comes from trees that are in
the magnolia family. The trees growth range spans from the
Mississippi River to the east coast of the United States. It may not
be surprising to find that the wood from poplar trees was used
extensively for buildings in that area between the 18th and 20th
centuries. Poplar
is considered a utility wood and is one of the most common utility
hardwoods in the United States. It is often used
for pallets, crates, furniture, paper,
kitchen cabinets, doors, paneling, moulding and millwork.
This particular piece provides a nice contrast to the Buckeye Burl. .
