Information:
The Woolly Rhinoceros is an
extinct species of Rhinoceros that was common throughout Europe and
northern Asia during the Pleistocene which lasted from 2.5 million
to 11,700 years ago. This animal became extinct because of several
reasons including hunting, climate change, and diseases. The Woolly
Rhinoceros coexisted with the Woolly Mammoth and both sometimes
shared the same forage areas. The Woolly Rhinoceros used in the
knife handles came from Siberia. Most of these fossils come from
native people who collect them on river banks and from various
digging sites. This particular piece used for the knife handle is
from near the exterior of the bone and has nice identations on each
side. Each side also has some exposed bone cells for additional
character.
Most
camels today are domesticated and they provide meat, milk, hair, and
bones. The leg bones are often used for making knife handle. These
leg bones are slightly more dense than cow leg bones, polishes to a
beautiful luster, and provides a nice contrast to the
Fossil
Woolly
Rhinoceros
Bone.
